Forecast for Global Oil Demand Cut

Published: October 10, 2008

PARIS — Oil prices fell Friday to their lowest level in more than a year, as the slowing global economy led the International Energy Agency to cut its forecast for global demand.

The agency, which is based in Paris, said it was cutting its forecast for 2008 global demand by 240,000 barrels a day. It now estimates daily demand this year of about 86.5 million barrels, an increase of 0.5 percent from last year — the slowest growth in 15 years. It also cut its forecast for 2009 demand by 440,000 barrels a day, to 87.2 million barrels, an 0.8 percent increase over this year’s demand....Read more

Tips to Benefit Optimally from Ramadan

Brother, may you have a happy and blessed Ramadan! Ramadan is a month of discipline, self-control, patience, and good behavior. In Ramadan, Muslims are expected to gain the fruits of fasting, namely, piety and consciousness of Allah. In this context, Allah Most High says in the Glorious Qur'an, (O ye who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you, even as it was prescribed for those before you, that ye may ward off evil).) (Al-Baqarah 2: 183)

In his response to your question, Sheikh Ahmad Kutty, a senior lecturer and Islamic scholar at the Islamic Institute of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, states:

Ramadan is the most blessed month in the Islamic calendar. It is primarily a spiritual training course intended to help us cultivate essential virtues and skills in order to lead a meaningful life. Most often we live at a very superficial level of our existence, forgetting our true essence and identity as human beings. In other words, we become totally preoccupied with the physical and material dimensions, forgetting the spiritual core of our personalities. Ramadan, therefore, comes to remind us of who we truly are and how we can discipline ourselves in such a way that we are fully awake to our full spiritual potential.

In order to benefit from the blessed month of Ramadan and its spiritual regimen, I suggest that we focus on the following:

1. Welcome Ramadan with great fervor and spirit and expect to come out of it fully transformed in body, mind, and soul.

2. Perform all of the acts of worship while being fully awake to their inner dimensions and meanings. Most often we allow ourselves to go through these rituals as mere mechanical chores with the result that we gain virtually no benefit from them either spiritually or morally.

3. Let your fasting be a fasting of body, mind, and soul. As Imam Ghazali said, the vast majority of people fast only for namesake. For while staying away from food, drink, and sexual gratifications, their minds, eyes, ears, tongue, and other faculties feast on haram (unlawful matters). Therefore, in order to gain any true benefit from our fasts, we need to impose a total self-restraint upon all our faculties and stay away from all sinful and idle thoughts, words, and actions, and nurture the thought and remembrance of Allah.

4. Ramadan is not merely a month of fasting. It is rather a season to cultivate all sorts of virtues and good habits. It is the perfect opportunity to break free of all negative habits that have been holding us back from achieving the true happiness and perfection that is ours as a birthright. So seize the opportunity and focus on achieving real goals to make it a true life-changing and life-enhancing experience.

5. Ramadan is the month of empathy and generosity. In fact, one of the main purposes of fasting is to instill in us empathy for the poor and the less deprived. By exposing us to compulsory hunger, we are given a practical lesson in hunger and thirst and thus we become better motivated to empathize with the poor. Hence we are ordered to practice the optimum level of charity in the month of Ramadan.

6. Ramadan is the time to familiarize ourselves with the Qur’an, the true source of guidance, illumination, healing, and mercy—Allah’s perfect gift to humanity. We can only do justice to the Book when we go beyond merely chanting and memorizing it to reflecting and meditating upon the Revealed Word and respond to it in true spirit by acting upon its teachings.

7. One of the main purposes of all of the acts of worship in Islam is to cultivate in us a true sense of community and spirit of fellow humanity. Therefore, it is imperative that our compassionate words and acts be extended not only towards ourselves but also towards all of Allah’s creation.

RAMAZAN MABARAK

A Brief Message From Imam Zaid Shakir

The Month of Ramadan is upon us. During this special time, we should all reflect on the many blessings God has bestowed upon us. Those of us who live here in the West have been blessed with many material bounties that are unimaginable to many of our coreligionists in the East. The amount of food we enjoy and unfortunately the amount that many of us waste, the expansiveness of most of our homes, our ready ability to own cars, trucks, and vans, our easy access to higher education, our ability to marry at a young age, all of these blessings and many others are incomprehensible to many Muslims in faraway lands struggling to live from day to day.........Learn more

why Muslims differ on the beginning and end of Fasting in Ramadan? Please explain! Jazakum Allahu Khayran.

Wa`alaykum as-salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Thanks for your important question and we earnestly implore Allah to enable us to reap the fruits of the blessed month or Ramadan, accept our acts of worship, and grant us forgiveness and immunity against the punishment of Hell-fire.

Surely, the month of Ramadan is the best season for offering good deeds and gaining reward. It is the duty of every Muslim to prepare himself for that blessed month.....Learn more

Significance of The Change of Qiblah

Two momentous events in the life of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) bear special significance as regards the institution of Prayer (salah) in Islam: The Miraj (the Prophet's Ascension) and the change of the qiblah from Jerusalem to Makkah.
There is general agreement among Muslim scholars that the Prophet's Night Journey and Ascension occurred in the month of Rajab, most probably on the 27th of that month, about a year before the Hijrah (the Prophet's emigration from Makkah to Madinah); and the change of qiblah happened in the middle of Shaban, about sixteen months after the emigration.

Rout to Islam-3

Stories Of Converted Muslims > Females > Ms. Afrah Alshaibani

May 2, 1996. Ever since I can remember, my family attended a non-denominational conservative Christian church (Church of Christ). I grew up in the church, taught bible school and sang in the choir. As a young teenager I began asking questions (as I think everyone does at one point in their lives): Why was I a member of the Church of Christ and not say Lutheran, Catholic or Methodist? If various churches are teaching conflicting doctrine, how do we know which one is right? Are they all right? Do `all paths lead to God' as I had heard some say? Others say that as long as you are a good person it doesn't matter what you believe - is that true??????Learn more

The Meaning of Islam

ISLAM is derived from the Arabic root "SALEMA": peace, purity, submission and obedience. In the religious sense, Islam means submission to the will of God and obedience to His law.

Everything and every phenomenon in the world, other than man is administered TOTALLY by God-made laws i.e. they are obedient to God and submissive to His laws i.e. they are in the STATE OF ISLAM. Man possesses the quality of intelligence and choice, thus he is invited to submit to the good will of God and obey His law ie. become a Muslim. Submission to the good will of God, together with obedience to His beneficial law, i.e. becoming a Muslim is the best safeguard for man's peace and harmony.......Learn more

BREAKING NEWS -Violance during the final match

There was a violation between some of the supporters and a supervisor during the final match played, yesterday's evening.According to the supporters the violation started due to the injustice between the students."the girls got closer to the goal, then most of us also moved near to the goal, but what happened was a supervisor came and ask only to the boys to move away'' a supporter said. However, its not a good idea to fight or even ague to teachers in any circumstances, and it could have been much better if the problem was complained to the seniors.

Ali Rameez’s two shops vandalized

Apparently some people aren’t fans of Ali Rameez’s music. Two shops owned by the former singer who had reached superstar status in Maldives with his singing before calling it a day and retiring to a life of piety and entrepreneurship, were vandalized on Monday night.

The former singing sensation told Haveeru on Tuesday that the windows of his two shops, Freeze Brand and Freeze Veg, had been smashed sometime during the night. The two shops are situated next to each other.

“The windows were smashed by a thrown pavement stone,” he said. “The windows were almost completely destroyed. One of the pavement stones was found inside the store.”

He also said that he did not think robbery was the motive behind the attack but admitted that he had no idea who had done it or why.

“Robbing the place was clearly not what was on the mind of whoever who did it,” Ali Rameez, who now worked for a society dedicated to spreading religious awareness, said. He also said that it would probably take around Rf2,500 to replace the broken windows.

A Media Official from the Maldives Police Service said that they were investigating the incident but that no arrests had been made yet.

The Dangers of Having Female Teachers for Boys in Elementary Schools

have come across what the newspaper al-Madinah printed in Issue#3898, dated 2-30-1397 A.H., written by one calling herself Nura bint Abdullah, under the title, "Face to Face.” In sum, Nura is saying that she had a meeting with a number of women, including the female Dean of the College of Education in Jeddah, whose name is Faiza. Nura mentions Faiza's surprise that there are no female teachers teaching boys in the elementary level, even to the fifth grade.Nura supported Faiza's views in that article for a number of reasons. Personally, with thanks to Faiza, Nura and their colleagues for the concern about the teaching of our young boys and for their welfare, I find it an obligation upon myself to point out that their suggestion is filled with evil and harmful consequences..........Learn more

Women appearing in front of men

Many men in some families allow their wives, daughters and sisters to appear in front of men who are not their mahrams, such as their friends and colleagues, and let them sit with them and talk to them as if they were their mahrams. If we advise them they say that this is their custom and the custom of their forefathers, and they claim that their hearts are clean. Some of them are proud and arrogant although they understand the ruling, and others are ignorant of the ruling. What is your advice to them?.

Praise be to Allaah. What every Muslim must do is not to rely on customs; rather he should refer the matter to the pure sharee’ah. Whatever Islam approves of is permissible and whatever it does not approve........Learn more
